What it is

A register of professional services used by people who make cosmetic products: cosmetic formulation consultants, cosmetic product safety assessors, testing laboratories and toxicologists. It is business facing. It exists because those are the services this publication's professional readers ask about, and because it is the only revenue line that does not involve taking money from the category whose claims are examined here.

What it is not

  • Not a ranking. Entries appear in alphabetical order and in no other order. There is no score, no rating, no tier, no badge and no featured position.
  • Not a recommendation. An entry means the entrant met the published criteria and paid the published fee. It does not mean their work has been assessed, because it has not.
  • Not linked from articles. No article on this site links to the register or to any entrant. That is a structural rule, not a policy that could be relaxed.
  • Not open to brands. No sunscreen, skincare or cosmetic brand may buy an entry at any price. See what we refuse to sell.

What is published for each entry

Disclosed, verifiable facts only: registered name, company registration number, country of operation, year established, services offered stated without superlatives, named contact with role, and any professional registration or accreditation held, with the awarding body and the reference by which it can be checked. Where a claimed registration cannot be verified against the awarding body, it is not published.

Current state of the register

The register is currently empty. No entries have been published.

Saying so is preferable to the usual practice, which is to populate a directory with businesses that never asked to be in it, harvested from public sources, so that the page looks established. That practice is why most industry directories are worthless: the listings do not indicate that anybody chose to be there, and the operator has no relationship with the businesses named. An empty register that says it is empty is more informative than a full one that cannot say where its entries came from.

How to be listed

Read the criteria and rates, which set out the requirements, the fee, the verification process and the complete list of what the fee does not buy. Applications are accepted or refused against the written criteria and for no other reason.

Editorial disclosure. This article contains no commercial links. Nothing on it has been paid for, no company has been given sight of it, and no brand or product is named anywhere on this site. This publication takes no money from sunscreen or skincare companies at any price, and the reasons are set out in what we refuse to sell. Published by Northbank Media.

The dispatch

A monthly note: what has been published, what has changed in a claim's status, and one piece of working. It carries a single clearly labelled sponsor line, at a published rate that cannot influence any status recorded here. Unsubscribe whenever you like.

Your address is used for the dispatch and nothing else. See privacy.
